How to choose an electric bicycle: the practical guide (no marketing)
Buying an e-bike is choosing a "system": frame + motor + battery + brakes. If one of these is too weak for your needs, you'll feel it every day.
1) First you decide on the "real use" (not the dream)
City/commute: urban or trekking.
Multimodal (subway/car): foldable.
Steep trails and climbs: e-MTB.
Children/deliveries/shopping: cargo e-bike.
If you're going to use it for urban commutes and want to avoid bureaucracy, focus on pedelec/EPAC (assistance up to 25 km/h) .
2) Motor: select according to inclines and load.
Mid-mounted engine (recommended for hills and heavy loads)
-
better efficiency and response
-
Excellent for climbing and handling extra weight.
Hub motor (okay for flat city and budget)
-
cheaper and simpler
-
It can lose "power" on long ramps.
Quick rule: if you frequently have uphill climbs or will be carrying heavy loads → consider a mid-mounted motor + more Wh.
3) Battery (Wh): the decision that most defines your autonomy.
Forget about "up to 120 km" without context. Range varies greatly depending on conditions (mode, weight, incline, wind, and temperature).
Practical suggestion:
-
Light city/short commutes: 400–500 Wh
-
For climbs and longer distances: 600 Wh+
-
Load, intensive use: 700 Wh+ (when available)
4) Brakes, tires and frame: where is it worth investing?
Brakes: disc (ideally hydraulic) = more safety in rain and downhill.
Tires: puncture-resistant for city use; wider for comfort and stability.
Frame: easy to put on and take off (especially in urban/cargo situations); the right size prevents pain.
5) Weight and ergonomics: the detail that makes you either love it or regret it.
E-bikes weigh more. If you have stairs, a small elevator, or need to carry them, consider this:
-
Electric folding (more compact)
-
Removable battery (for charging without getting on the bike)
-
frame with handle/friendly shape
6) Final checklist before clicking “buy”
-
Is it a pedelec/EPAC 25 km/h for urban use?
-
Battery with enough Wh for your journey?
-
Quality brakes?
-
Warranty and support in Portugal?
-
Anti-theft devices and accessories (lights/reflectors) — essential items for security.
