How to wash your car without scratches (the guide that really prevents swirls)

Many people buy wax and polish, but their paintwork still looks "marked." The reason is simple: improper washing constantly creates micro-scratches and swirls.

1) Pre-wash: removes the "bulk" of the dirt before touching the paint.

Objective: to remove loose dirt (dust, sand, light mud) to reduce friction.

Options:

  • foam (foam cannon) or pre-spray

  • Rinse thoroughly before contact.

2) pH-neutral shampoo: ideal for maintenance.

Neutral pH shampoos are popular because they tend to cleanse without damaging the protective coating (wax/sealant) during regular washing.

Common mistake: using household detergent. It can "dry out" protective coatings and plastics (and it's not formulated for automotive varnish).

3) Two-bucket method: simple and effective

  • Bucket 1: shampoo + water (washing)

  • Bucket 2: clean water (rinse the glove)
This helps keep dirt out of the glove and reduces the risk of scratching.

Bonus: Using a grit guard at the bottom helps trap particles.

4) Gloves and cloths: microfiber > sponge

A microfiber glove "holds" particles away from the paint better. Avoid using hard sponges and old cloths.

5) Drying without streaks

Proper microfiber and gentle technique reduce the risk of swirling; cleaning experts also emphasize microfiber as essential for minimizing risks.

Mini-checklist

  • Wash in the shade (if possible)

  • Pre-wash before touching

  • 2 buckets + microfiber glove

  • Dry with a drying towel.
