Tower with slide and swing: measuring space and assembling safely.

1) First step (which avoids 80% of regrets): measure the right space.

When buying a tower with a slide and swing , the classic mistake is to only measure "where it fits". What matters is:

  1. area occupied by the structure (footprint on the ground)

  2. open areas around , especially on the swing (movement) and the slide (exit area)

For public spaces, the EN 1176 family is the European reference for safety requirements for playground equipment (it has specific sections for swings and slides).
For domestic use, many of these products qualify as activity toys (EN 71-8).

A rule of thumb for home use: don't invent "standard distances." Always follow the manual and the areas recommended by the manufacturer (because each model has different geometry and height).

2) Domestic vs. “playground” (condominium/hotel/school): why everything changes

  • At home (domestic use): typically enters as a toy/household activity (EN 71-8 is often the relevant standard).

  • In collective/public spaces: in Portugal, the regulations for Play and Recreation Areas (Decree-Law 203/2015) apply, focusing on safety, maintenance, and inspection conditions.
And this is where the EN 1176/EN 1177 standards become much more important.

If the goal is to install it in a condominium with extensive use, it's worth treating it as a "project" and not just a purchase.

3) Flooring: safety starts on the floor (even at home)

APSI recommends that household toys (e.g., small slides and swings) be placed on soft surfaces , such as grass or sand, to reduce injuries from falls.

In a playground context (public use), the EN 1177 standard describes test methods for impact attenuation and is linked to the concept of fall height and impact zones.

How to apply it at home, without complications:

  • If the structure is low , grass/sand may be sufficient.

  • If the floor is taller or heavily used, consider carpets/flooring with lower foot pressure (see article #3 in this series).

4) Fixation/anchoring: when is it mandatory "in practice"?

Many kits recommend anchoring when:

  • the structure has balance (horizontal and repeated forces)

  • The terrain is uneven.

  • There is strong wind or heavy use.

EN 71-8 covers domestic activity toys, including structures that may incorporate crossbeams and support the weight of children; this is precisely the type of product where stability and correct assembly are crucial.

Simple rules for safe assembly:

  • assemble on a level surface

  • tighten screws according to the manual (not by eye)

  • Retighten after the first week of use (the structure “settles in”)

5) Choosing the right model (for your space and age)

If space is limited

  • Opt for a shorter slide and a swing with a smaller range of motion (depending on the product).

  • Or choose a playhouse with a slide (without a swing) to reduce the need for a free play area.

If you want to "grow with the child"

  • modular structures (that accept upgrades)

  • Sturdy wood with durable hardware (especially in coastal areas)

For 2 children

  • Confirm the weight limit per component (not just "total weight").

  • Check if the balance is for 1 or 2 users.

6) Maintenance: the part that almost nobody does (and where the problems begin)

At home, simple maintenance prevents 90% of the risks:

  • Monthly inspection of screws and articulation points.

  • Inspection for cracks , splinters (wood) and deformations (plastic)

  • Cleaning and drying during the rainy season.

  • Replacement of ropes/chains and seats when worn.

For collective/public spaces, Decree-Law 203/2015 reinforces the logic of maintenance and inspection.

Checklist “before buying and assembling”

  • Is it for domestic or collective/public use? (changes obligations)

  • Does it have a CE certification and a clear manual?

  • Does this qualify as a "domestic activity" (EN 71-8) or a park (EN 1176/1177)?

  • Measured space: footprint + free zones (swing/slide)

  • Soft ground (grass/sand or equivalent solution)

  • Fixing/anchoring as per manual.

  • Monthly maintenance plan
